I don't have any medical experience, can I still help?
Yes, everyone is encouraged to join. We offer training that will allow you to ride on our ambulances and render emergency medical care to our fellow community members.
What are the requirements to be a member?
Though the requirements vary depending on your position in the corps, our minimum requirements to maintain an "Active Member" status are 24 hours riding time during the week and 12 hours during the weekends calculated monthly. If your schedule permits you to only ride on the weekends for any reason, you are encouraged to apply since the weekend shifts are more difficult than the weekday shifts to fill. All members who ride on our ambulances must maintain a Cardiopulmonary Resucitation certification, this includes EMT's and drivers.
Are there any costs associated with being a member?
No, we offer free uniforms and training. We reimburse members for boots and pants. The reimbursement amount is adequate to cover the costs associated with these items, but if you chose to buy more expensive uniform items, you will be responsible for the excess amount. We supply uniform shirts, both white shirts and polo shirts. From time to time, members who demonstrate their willingness to go "above and beyond" the minimum are given additional uniform items as a token of appreciation. All active members are also given a two-way radio.
What if I want to join, but don't feel I could handle taking care of a patient?
We have many positions that are essential to the corp's operations that do no require active riding. These positions are administrative and clerical. We also have members that only serve as drivers. These members, just like any other member that are authorized to drive our ambulances, must go through our driver training and evaluation process, including attending a New York State Fire Prevention and Control Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course.
What does the application process entail/How do I join?
You can find an application on our Join page and a member of our Membership Committee will be in touch with you to arrange an interview and discuss the process with you in person. You can also stop by the building and pick up a membership application. Thirdly, you can call and arrange for an application be mailed to you. Once you express interest in joining, you will be asked to meet with one of our Membership Committee members for an interview. After that interview, you will then be presented to our general membership at our next general membership meeting which are held on the second Thursday of every month. The membership will then vote on your admission to the Corps. Upon a favorable vote at our meeting, you will then be placed on probationary status for a period of 90 days. During those 90 days you will be expected to earn your CPR certification and schedule a shift to ride. During that time, your performance will be evaluated by the crew with whom you ride. Once the probationary period is over, it will be voted on at our general membership meeting whether or not you have demonstrated those qualities we look for in a member. Once probation is over, you can pursue driver training and our EMT (if applicable) evaluation process so that you may ride as the crew chief or driver, not as a third member there to assist the crew.
