Youth Corps

Building Our Future with the Youth Corps

teensThe Nyack Community Ambulance Corps takes extraordinary pride in its Youth Corps, which provides an opportunity for young adults age 15 to 18 to

  • give back to the community,
  • gain valuable medical knowledge and
  • function with courtesy, discipline and professionalism.

The duties of a Youth Corps member include

  • riding on ambulance calls with an EMT and Driver
  • attending monthly meetings, and
  • participating in Corps training and activities.

We encourage our Youth Corps members to join the Senior Corps and achieve their EMT-B certification, as many do, when they are 18 years old.

Before being able to ride on ambulance calls, each Youth Corps member is required to be certified in  CPR for healthcare providers, Bloodborne Pathogens awareness, and Basic First Aid, all provided by the ambulance corps. Youth Corps members are also made familiar with the equipment in the ambulance and trained in its use before riding along. Members are also strongly encouraged to continue their emergency medical education by taking the New York State Certified First Responder (CFR) course when they are 16 years old.

When a Youth Corps member is permitted to ride on ambulance calls, the care that he/she is allowed to administer is limited to the training received. Each emergency is a learning experience, both medically and personally. As experience in ambulance calls increases, the range of a Youth Corps member's skills and confidence increase as well.

The safety of each member of the crew is the primary concern of the crew chief (EMT in charge) and under no circumstance will any Youth Corps member be placed in a potentially dangerous situation.

READY TO JOIN US?

To join the Youth Corps, simply fill out an application online. Print out a copy of the completed application, and the Parent/Guardian Youth Corps Permission Form and have it signed. as well. Our Youth Corps Advisor will review your application and call or email you to set up an interview, to which you must bring the signed Parent/Guardian Youth Corps Permission Form.

As a member, you will receive training from experienced professionals who will prepare you to administer prehospital care. Youth Corps Members who are cleared to ride on ambulance calls will receive training, uniforms and accessories at no cost.

Being a member of Nyack Community Ambulance Corps will provide you with unforgettable experiences. You will learn and you will grow in confidence and competence. You'll also build strong friendships with other members, participate in EMS-related social activities and county- and state-wide training, and will soon feel that you have become part of our family. You will also learn to take on leadership roles when you are ready: many members of the Senior Corps began as Youth Corps members, including Captains, Lieutenants and Presidents, making important decisions every day for our organization.

We look forward to hearing from you. The Youth Corps is a great opportunity for high school students to make a positive difference in their community, learn lifesaving medical skills, and advance to leadership roles in emergency medicine.

Email the Youth Corps Advisor if you or your family have questions, or need further information.
